H-and-C-handles-2

Most people only think of plumbers when they have a leak, do not have heat or air conditioning, or find a toilet that constantly keeps running. As a matter of fact, Muccia Plumbing, Heating & AC gets a lot of those calls every day.

However soon holidays will be upon us, and there can be nothing more embarrassing than a bathroom with a ring around the toilet, tub, or shower glass that looks yucky or just simply coated in a white, ghostly film that refuses to come out despite hours of scrubbing with Windex, Ammonia, or a steamer trunk full of cleaning products.

So here are Mike’s Tips for getting your bathroom appliances clean and shiny, without a lot of elbow grease, and with safe products

The Toilet aka The Porcelain Throne – Bluewater tablets do very little to clean “spots” that are resistant to flushing – no matter how many times you press a tank button or push the handle down. Here’s the secret.

The Tools -You’ll need to buy a few things from the home improvement center, although Walmart often sells everything you need if they are your preferred store:

  • Acidic Toilet Bowl Cleaner. (No”ducks” or other bowl cleaners) Walmart’s version comes in a blue container.
  • 2 pairs of disposable rubber gloves
  • Inexpensive eye protection
  • A toilet bowl brush with a separate “ring” cleaner attached
  • Pumie (ask for it by name)- with w/o a handle. It safely cleans the ring which developed over years of toilet use.

The Process – It’s really simple if you can forget what’s been going into the bowl for however many years it’s been there. Start by turning off the valve that supplies water to the tank. It turns clockwise. If you have even the slightest problem, STOP. We don’t want to turn a toilet cleaning project into a service call for a broken valve. We’ll work around it. Put on your rubber gloves and eye protection. Pour about a cup of toilet bowl acidic cleaner brush with a rim attachment. No matter how many people live in your home and regularly use the toilet, an Acidic Cleaner will safely give your bowl its first step in being sparkling clean.

Now find the water turn-off valve near the bowl. It’s fairly easy to spot and unless it was installed before automobiles were invented, it should turn easily by hand. If it doesn’t – STOP. We don’t want to turn a cleaning job into a service call. We’ll work around it. If you are able to turn it off, turn the valve to the right so that it will not refill the tank. We want the bowl as empty as possible.

Put on your gloves, and safety glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, anything that can protect your eyes in the event of a splash. Pour about a cup of the Acidic Cleaner. Scrub the bowl with the puffy part of the brush, and get under the rim with the wire brush end of the brush. Scrub for a few minutes. Grab a disposable sponge and use it to wash the outer part of the bowl where it meets the seat. While you’re at it, give the seat a good scrub with clean water and acidic cleaner. Have a spray bottle handy with white vinegar, and rinse the bowl, seat, and any other areas not in the bowl until you are satisfied your bowl is clean.
